The Day the Dream Arrived

For three years, we worked, prayed, waited and believed for this day.

The day the 40-foot Project C.U.R.E. container finally arrived on Barbuda, and we watched it being opened, unloaded, and the medical equipment carried into Hannah Thomas Hospital, will forever be etched in our minds.

What had once been a dream was now sitting right in front of us.

Today, Hannah Thomas Hospital has a fully functional maternity ward, and babies can be born on Barbuda again. It has an X-ray machine, an ultrasound machine, and a warehouse filled with medical supplies that will help meet needs for years to come.

Why This Project Was Selected

When BFM first took on the Hannah Thomas Hospital, we knew we were stepping into one of the largest and most significant projects we had ever undertaken on Barbuda.

After Hurricane Irma, only the main section of the hospital had been restored, and even that was functioning with extremely limited medical equipment and supplies. For years, the people of Barbuda had asked, prayed and fought for adequate medical care on their own island.

We believed God was giving BFM an opportunity to help answer those prayers. What followed was a three-year journey of faith, perseverance, partnership and extraordinary generosity.

The Power of Partnership

Something of this magnitude could never have been accomplished by BFM alone.

Project C.U.R.E. in Denver, Colorado, provided the medical equipment and supplies that filled that 40-foot container, and Gary & Anne Stern of Canary Labs in Martinsburg, Pennsylvania, came alongside us as invaluable partners in making this dream a reality.

And then there are the countless donors, team members, volunteers and prayer warriors who gave, served and believed with us throughout this three-year journey.

The Impact

When we originally wrote about this project, we said that a fully functioning Hannah Thomas Hospital would impact every person on Barbuda, from the unborn child to the oldest living resident on the island. Today, we are watching that become reality.

Mothers have access to maternity care. Ultrasounds and X-rays can be performed on island. Doctors and nurses have equipment and supplies they desperately needed. And an entire warehouse is stocked with medical supplies that will continue meeting needs for years to come.

To say we are filled with joy and gratitude does not begin to describe it.
