In October of 2019, Donnie and I set out from our home in Celina, Texas with nothing more than a suburban, a trailer in tow, and a God-sized dream in our hearts. We were headed to Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania, then on to Miami—where everything we’d gathered for our faith-based nonprofit ministry would be loaded into a shipping container bound for Antigua and, eventually,
barged over to Barbuda.
What were we doing? We weren’t entirely sure how it would all come together, but we knew this was the beginning of something special: building and restoring what would one day become the Bonnie Floyd Ministries mission team home in Barbuda.
Before we pulled out of the driveway, my faithful assistant Nicole handed me a small wooden plaque. Just four words etched on it:
“Big Ideas Have Small Beginnings.”
I placed it on the dashboard of our suburban, where it rode with us all the way to Miami. From there, I tucked it into my suitcase and carried it with me across the sea to Barbuda.
Six years have passed since that journey began. Today, that same little plaque now sits next to the welcome sign in the eating corner of our beautiful team home. It rests beside the greeting I write for each new mission team that walks through our doors—over 70 mission teams have come to serve the people of Barbuda, and every one of them has been a part of this unfolding story of
Christian ministry work in the Caribbean.
BFM started with one big idea—and very, very small beginnings. We’re still small in size, and I often say, “BFM is tiny, but God makes us mighty.”
We’ve faced what seemed impossible: financial challenges, logistical hurdles, and all the unknowns of running a small Christian ministry on a remote island. But time and time again, God moved miraculously. He stirred the hearts of generous people—friends, donors, and partners—who made this dream a reality.
Even during COVID, when everything felt uncertain, God whispered to our hearts, “Though the world has changed around you, I have not. Keep moving forward.”
And we did.
With determined faith, we kept saying yes. Kept building. Kept trusting.
That little sign still speaks truth to me today. Big ideas really do have small beginnings—but with God, those beginnings can grow into
something far greater than we could ever imagine.
If this story stirs your heart, we’d love for you to be a part of what God is doing through Bonnie Floyd Ministries and our Barbuda 180 Misson. Whether through prayer, giving, or joining a future mission team, there’s room at the table for you.
You can follow our journey, stay connected with our updates, and see how God continues to turn small beginnings into mighty works of His glory.
